BATTERY RECYCLING
Battery recycling in Mesa is best handled at the city’s hazardous waste collection events. See below for more information.
BLUE BIN RECYCLING
In the city of Mesa, you may recycle the following items in your blue recycling bin:
- Aluminum and other metals in the form of beverage, tin and food cans, pie plates, and clean aluminum foil
- Cardboard and chipboard in the form of corrugated boxes, so long as they are flattened and do not contain styrofoam and other packing materials, dry food boxes with liners removed, shoeboxes, and soap and detergent boxes, 6- and 12-pack beverage containers, ice cream containers and juice cartons and empty paper towel tubes
- Glass bottles and jars (green, amber and clear)
- Paper in the form of newspaper, magazines, phone books and inserts, computer and writing paper, file folders, paper bags, and junk mail
- Shredded paper that is bagged and tied in a clear plastic bag
- Plastic containers that have a neck smaller than the base or those with a screw top lid like soda bottles, liquid detergent bottles and milk jugs
REMOVE ALL LIDS BEFORE PLACING BOTTLES AND JARS IN THE BIN.
You may NOT recycle:
- Pottery, window glass and light bulbs
- Plastic bags
- Facial and toilet paper, paper towels, napkins and diapers
- Styrofoam of any kind
- Clothes hangers and scrap metal
- Clothing of any kind
- Pizza boxes
- Dog food bags
- PVC piping
- Wood or yard waste
- Hazardous waste
- Waxed boxes and food containers
- Shredded paper
All items should be clean, dry and empty and should be placed in the blue bin with the lid closed by 6 a.m. If you have further questions about recycling in Mesa, contact the recycling hotline at (480) 644-2222.
GREEN BARRELL RECYCLING
In the city of Mesa, you may exchange a black trash barrel for a green barrel or you can pay a monthly fee for a green waste barrel. In your green barrel, you can place unbagged yard waste, such as grass, leaves, plant trimmings, tree branches and prunings. All tree branch limbs and trimmings should be cut into two-foot sections. Do not use the barrel for lumber, trash, food waste, metal or concrete. Questions should be directed to the city of Mesa recycling hotline at (480) 644-2222.
BULK ITEM DISPOSAL
The city of Mesa offers bulk item curbside pickup for a nominal fee. This includes items like yard waste, mattresses and furniture. To schedule a bulk pickup, call (480) 644-2688.
The city asks that you do:
- Place bulky items on the curb by 6 a.m. on the day of pickup
- Place lightweight items (like grass, bark, twigs, etc.) in small boxes or plastic bags
- Place cacti in small cardboard boxes
- Cut items such as tree branches, wood and carpet and tie them into bundles not to exceed 24” indiameter, 48” in length, or 60 pounds in weight
- Do put out furniture as is for collection
They ask that you do not:
- Place items out for collection before 6 p.m. the day prior to your scheduled collection day.
- Put out dirt, rock, gravel, cement, shingles, bricks, blocks, oil, paint, batteries, tires, or any other hazardous materials.
- Do not leave out cardboard boxes, as these can be recycled.
HAZARDOUS WASTE
Mesa handles hazardous waste disposal at a few specific events. Currently, hazardous waste drop-offs are scheduled as follows:
East Mesa – 6935 East Decatur St.
- October 4, 2008
- February 7, 2009
West Mesa – 2412 North Center St.
- April 19, 2008
- December 13, 2008
All events run from 8 a.m. to noon. As this information is subject to change, check for updates at http://www.cityofmesa.org/waste/HHW.aspx.
Acceptable items include paint, polishes & varnishes, paint related materials, turpentine, aerosol cans, adhesives, antifreeze, automobile tires, fluorescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs, appliances (limit two), motor oil, fuel additives, pool chemicals, gasoline, batteries, mercury, pesticides, electronics, and transmission fluid. The events do NOT accept commercial or industrial waste, 55-gallon drums of material, large truck tires, radioactive material, explosives, or bullets and live ammunition.
