BATTERY RECYCLING
Battery recycling in Gilbert is best handled at the South Area Service Center, located at the corner of Greenfield and Queen Creek Rd. at 2224 E. Queen Creek Rd. The center is open to the public weekly for hazardous waste drop off. Feel free to drop off your waste every Wednesday and Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. See our section on hazardous waste for more information.
BLUE BIN RECYCLING
In the city of Gilbert, you may recycle the following items in your recycling bin:
- Shredded paper that has been placed in a clear plastic bag.
- Aluminum and other metals in the form of beverage, tin and food cans.
- Cardboard and chipboard in the form of corrugated boxes, so long as they are flattened and donot contain styrofoam and other packing materials, dry food boxes with liners removed, shoe boxes, and soap and detergent boxes.
- Glass bottles and jars (green, amber and clear).
- Paper in the form of newspaper, magazines, phone books and inserts, computer and writing paper, file folders, paper bags, and junk mail.
- Plastic bottles and jugs that have a neck smaller than the base or a screw top lid such as soda bottles.
You may NOT recycle:
- Pottery, window glass and light bulbs
- Plastic bags
- Facial and toilet paper, paper towels, napkins and diapers
- Styrofoam of any kind or bubble wrap
- Wrapping paper
- Waxed boxes and food containers
- Hardbound books
All items should be clean, dry and empty and should be placed in the blue bin with the lid closed by 5 a.m. Gilbert monitors blue bins – if you are found to have misused your blue bin three times, you will lose recycling privileges. BULK ITEM DISPOSAL
Gilbert residents may take one free load each month to the Santan Transfer Station, located n Mesa at 4040 S. 80th St. They must be operating a non-commercial vehicle and must be able to show a utility bill and driver’s license to prove residency. The load cannot exceed 2,000 pounds and should be covered with a tarp or securely tied down. The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 6 a.m. to noon. Items accepted include:
- Tree trimmings and bagged yard clippings
- Weeds and brush
- Bagged leaves
- Dishwashers
- Furniture
- Microwave ovens
- Televisions
The bulk materials NOT accepted include:
- Building and construction materials, such as sheet rock, wood paneling, cinder blocks, bricks, and roofing materials
- Dirt and gravel
- Propane tanks and hazardous waste
- Tires and auto parts
- Ammunition and explosive materials
The county also collects and recycles large appliances on Thursdays the week of your bulk trash pick up. Residents must call (480) 503-6400 to arrange for collection. Appliances collected include:
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Washers
- Dryers
- Water heaters
- Air Conditioners
Gilbert asks that you remove doors, latches, and locks from discarded cabinets, chests, and appliances for safety reasons.
HAZARDOUS WASTE

- Automobile and household batteries
- Rimless automobile tires
- Paints and stains
- Adhesives and solvents
- Motor oil, antifreeze, transmission and hydraulic fluids, gasoline and diesel fuel
- Pool chemicals and household cleaners
- Fluorescent light bulbs
- Electronic wastes such as computers, printers, monitors, televisions, etc.
- Weed killer and pesticides
There is a 5-gallon limit on paint, oil and antifreeze.
They do not accept:
- Business or commercial hazardous waste
- Tires with rims
- Ammunition or explosives
- Radioactive materials
- 55-gallon drums of material
